Sigiriya · Dambulla · Kandy
This route covers the ancient core of Sri Lanka: the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya rising out of the jungle, the painted cave temples of Dambulla, and Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. A local historian guide brings the sites to life with stories the guidebooks skip, and the pace stays relaxed — early starts to beat the heat and crowds, free afternoons to rest.
Day by day
Arrive in the Cultural Triangle and climb Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock fortress with its frescoes and lion's-paw entrance. Optional sunrise or sunset hike up neighbouring Pidurangala for the classic photo of the rock.
Visit the Dambulla cave temple complex, its ceilings covered in centuries-old Buddhist murals, then a village tour by bicycle and traditional catamaran on a nearby lake. Afternoon transfer to Kandy.
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and take a walk around Kandy Lake before your driver transfers you onward or to the airport.
