The most common planning mistake we see is travellers checking "Sri Lanka weather" as if the whole island shares one climate. It doesn't — two separate monsoons hit opposite coasts at opposite times, which means there's rarely a single bad month to visit, just a wrong region for that month.
West & south coasts, and the hill country
Best from December to March. This covers Colombo, Mirissa, Galle, Weligama and the hill country towns like Ella and Nuwara Eliya. This is also the only season for whale watching out of Mirissa.
East coast
Best from May to September, when the west coast monsoon is in full swing. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay flip into their dry season exactly when the south is getting rain — which is why a lot of returning visitors plan a west-coast trip in one season and an east-coast surf trip in another.
Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura)
This inland region has a milder split between seasons and is workable most of the year, though the driest, most comfortable months for climbing Sigiriya are January to April.
Shoulder seasons worth considering
- April and September see short transitional windows with lower prices and fewer crowds, and weather that's still mostly workable.
- December and early January are peak season and priced accordingly — book accommodation well ahead if travelling then.
Our honest recommendation
If this is a first visit and you want one trip that covers hill country, culture and the south coast, aim for January to March. If a beach-focused east coast trip or surf trip is the priority, July and August tend to be calmer and quieter.
